Learning Japanese:  Facts about Japan and the language

This is a photograph of the Torii gate by Miyajima, near Hiroshima in Japan.  It is one of the favourite locations of one of our Japanese teachers and after seeing the photographs, I can see why.

 

In this blog post, we look at some interesting facts about the land of the rising sun and the Japanese language.  Hopefully, you will be inspired to learn more of this great language.

1. It is a truly Unique Language

Even British people who speak only a little bit of Japanese stand out from the crowd as there are only 125 million native speakers of the language.  Most of them are concentrated in Japan.  

 

2. It is rather easy to speak

Spoken Japanese is surprisingly easy to learn.  You will be amazed at how quickly you pick up the basics of the language as pronunciation is straightforward and grammar and sentence structure are both relatively simple.  There are some difficult aspects (particularly in relation to social status) but they can be explained by your tutor.

 

3. Japanese companies are world beaters

At one point, Japanese-made technology was considered to be the best in the world.  There is now greater competition, but still companies such as Sony, Toshiba, Toyota and Sharp continue to make superb products for the world to use.

 

4. The number of people studying Japanese continues to grow

A record number of people are now studying Japanese according to a recent survey for The Japan Times.  It has been estimated that 4 million people are learning the language, and this is increasing year on year.

 

5. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test

This test evaluates non-native speakers' level of Japanese and is held twice a year around the world.  There are five levels of knowledge; from Basic to Advanced level.  There is also a test in Business Japanese.  

 

6. Tokyo is the largest city in the world

Most experts will tell you that Tokyo is the biggest city in the world with an incredible 36 million inhabitants.  It is a great city to spend time in, with an incredible energy.  While Japanese people study English in high school, they struggle to speak it with any degree of confidence so some knowledge of the language will help you.  If you are travelling around, you will need to speak Japanese.  

 

7. The food is exceptional

Japanese cuisine is renowned for its' creativity and inventiveness and Japanese restaurants have earned more Michelin stars than any other nation in the world.
