With the Olympics in Rio in 2016, there has never been a better time to start learning Portuguese with London's best Portuguese language teachers. Here are a few questions and answers about the language just to help you discover more about it.
1. How many people speak Portuguese?
There are around 220 million native speakers of Portuguese, the majority of whom live in Brazil. It has been estimated that a further 30 million people speak Portuguese as a second language.
2. Where is it spoken?
Aside from Portugal, Mozambique and Brazil, you can also find Portuguese communities in Andorra, Australia, Japan and Switzerland along with several more territories. You can also speak it in London's Little Portugal, which is close to Vauxhall station.
3. What is the value to me of studying Portuguese?
Portuguese is one of the fastest growing world languages, with UNESCO estimating that by 2050, there will be 400 million native speakers of Portuguese. Many nations include the language as part of their school curriculum with further nations to follow.
4. Are there many varieties of Portuguese?
The main two types of Portuguese are European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. As with British English and American English, one has to accept that there will be differences used in the sounds and in expressions, but of course if you can communicate in one version, you will be able to communicate in the other.
5. Should I learn Business Portuguese?
Brazil is a BRIC nation, and the economy is expanding at an incredible rate. Many top business people hail from Brazil and Brazilian multinationals are growing every day. This means that companies are increasingly recognising that Brazil is a nation to do business with. While many Brazilians speak English, there is much to be gained from speaking some Portuguese.
