Learn Russian:  Five reasons to learn the language

2. You can Travel

I took the Trans-Siberian Express between Irkutsk and Moscow and it is an incredible four-day journey that many people dream of going on.  The fact that I did not speak Russian at the time did lessen the experience for me though.  If you want to experience the true meaning of Russia then you have to try and speak some of the language and travel widely.

3. The Literature

I mentioned Pushkin and Dostoevsky earlier, and we can also add Gogol and Tolstoy.  The range of Russian literature is impressive and while it can be read in English, surely nothing gives a greater thrill than reading a great literary work in its original language.

4. It is a Slavic Language

Russian is an East Slavic language and by understanding it, you will be able to then understand Ukrainian and Belarussian.  It will also make it easier for you to learn other Slavic languages such as Czech, Polish and Croatian.

5. For your Intellectual Dexterity

We have talked on previous pages about the overall benefits of being bilingual.  Knowing a second language means that you are less prone to dementia and alzheimer's in old age.  Just like your body needs a workout, your brain does too and the process of learning any language means that your mind gets that well-needed exercise.

There is a scene in the British comedy film "A Fish called Wanda" where the main character attempts to seduce a beautiful American woman by speaking Russian. Ordinarily, people do not think of Russian as a beautiful language but when you hear it in the film you will understand the appeal.  It is the language of Pushkin and Dostoevsky and it is difficult to master because of its written form as well as its spoken form, but we all love a challenge, so here is why you should learn Russian.

1. For Business

While events in Russian might at times seem erratic, the economy remains one of the largest in the world and the country is abundant in natural resources; from gas to coal to precious metals.  If you work in any of these industries then knowledge of Russian is a plus.
